25 artists for 25 years
The exploration of urban space that characterises dérive as a journal has, from the very beginning, encompassed not only research from the fields of academia and urban activism, but also work from the field of art. Marking 25 years of dérive, 25+1 positions on the city and urban space present a cross-section of these artistic explorations, which have been presented as artists inserts in more than 100 issues of dérive, curated by Paul Rajakovics/ Barbara Holub and Andreas Fogarasi.
The contributions take visitors on a dérive through the city across selected off-spaces in Vienna’s 2nd, 5th and 6th district, exploring themes such as history and memory (SUPER, Mariahilf District Museum), landscape and the city (FLUCC), alternative geographies and the exploration of urban contexts (hoast and Sehsaal), spheres of labour (Size Matters) or activism and the appropriation of public space (Sussudio and Ve.Sch).
Curators of the exhibitions: Andreas Fogarasi, Michael Klein and Paul Rajakovics
The exhibitions at Az W (10 May – 21 June 2026) and in the Art Spaces, as well as the accompanying programme, invites to engage with the city through science, art and activism – referring to the ‘right to the city’ (Henri Lefebvre) as a vision for an emancipatory society.
