To mark the 500th anniversary of the Peasants' War in Salzburg, Barbara Holub invites participants to take part in a collective production of designing a flag.
Democracy is not something that can be taken for granted; it has had to be fought for over centuries and defended time and again. The uprisings of the Salzburg miners and farmers in 1525 and 1526, known as the Salzburg Peasants' War, were an attempt by the civilian population to rebel against the religious and secular domination of Cardinal Archbishop Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg and thus fight for more rights and, above all, religious freedom. Peasant war flags served as a means of orientation and affiliation during the uprisings.
In three workshops we will discuss current issues related to these uprisings 500 years ago and the demand for social justice today.
How can civil courage and socio-political engagement be encouraged today? What do we want to protest for? We will develop ideas and designs and sew/embroider elements for a collectively producing a flag.
At the opening, the flag will be carried in a procession to the Vogtturm tower and hoisted on its façade.
WANN WENN NICHT JETZT (WHEN IF NOT NOW) is a project of SIMULTAN, organised by periscope, and funded by the Region of Salzburg.
It is accompanied by the curator Tina Teufel (Museum of Modern Art Salzburg) and supported by the Salzburg Museum.
